Ahh Yellow Springs. It takes 10 minutes on a country road to get there, but when you arrive it’s worth it. Unlike anywhere else in Ohio, Yellow Springs is the loved “hippie town” in the middle of the Dayton-area countryside. Don’t miss this small village or you’ll miss out on these 10 things.
1. Young’s Jersey Dairy
Do you like comfort food? How about fresh ice cream? How about feeding goats and corn mazes? A definite summertime stop, Young’s isn’t short on the activities for the entire family.
2. House of Ravenwood
This small shop in downtown Yellow Springs is the perfect stop for finding the perfect crystals to balance your mood or sage bushels to cleanse your house. But it is also known for some of the best tarot card readings in the Dayton area that aren’t at all intimidating. Even I have been going here to see Leah for years, so trust me.
3. The Winds
Nationally recognized and absolutely delicious, The Winds is the perfect place for a foodie in Yellow Springs. The menu changes seasonally and is mostly organic. I am in love with the Route 68 for brunch which included a fried piece of trout with scrambled eggs and the best biscuits you will find this side of the Mason-Dixon line.
4. Dino’s Cappuccinos
This little coffeeshop in the middle of downtown is the perfect spot for coffee and people watching (which is there is plenty of in Yellow Springs).
5. Glen Helen
This gorgeous nature reserve is a short walk from downtown Yellow Springs. In addition to hiking trails and campgrounds, there are also nature events like “Fireside Nature Stories” where stories are told accompanied by native flute music. So Yellow Springs.
6. Ha Ha Pizza
With whole wheat crusts and sunflower seeds as toppings, this pizza joint is not to be missed. They were doing toppings beyond the pepperoni way before it was cool. And the salad bar is a great reason to get you to dine in.
7. Sunrise Café
Another great brunch spot in Yellow Springs featuring an organic and natural menu. There is also a full bar so get the bloody Mary. The garnish is ridiculous.
8. Little Art Theater
This tiny, 1920’s-era theater in downtown Yellow Springs shows movies that you won’t find in the giant, suburban movie theaters. There are also educational series on movies and matinees of old movies such as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “When Harry Met Sally.”
9. Yellow Springs Street Fair
For one day in June and October everyone comes to Yellow Springs for their massive street fair. If you are in the market for some tie-dye products, this is the time to buy them. There are also musicians and performances and every kind of food an alcohol you can desire.
10. Dave Chappelle
Seriously. This famous comedian is a longtime resident of Yellow Springs and currently lives in the Dayton area. Every Daytonian has a story about meeting Dave Chappelle, but he is often seen in Yellow Springs. Don’t worry, we all get a little star-struck the first time.
